Press an arrow key (or W/A/S/D, or swipe on mobile) and every tile on the board slides as far as it can in that direction. Tiles with matching numbers that collide merge into one tile holding their sum. After each move that changes the board, a new tile (usually a 2, sometimes a 4) appears in an empty cell. Keep merging to build higher tiles; the game ends when the board is full and no merge is possible in any direction.

Every time two tiles merge, the value of the new tile is added to your score. Merging two 8s into a 16 adds 16 points; merging two 1024s into a 2048 adds 2048 points on its own. Because later merges are worth far more than early ones, a long, careful game usually scores higher than a fast, reckless one.

A full board is not automatically game over — it only ends when no move in any direction would change the board, meaning no two adjacent tiles share a value anywhere. If even one merge is still available, you can keep playing.

Yes. 2048.lol includes a one-step undo that rewinds your most recent move, including the tile it spawned. It is meant to let you take back a single misclick or a move you immediately regret, not to replay an entire game — it resets as soon as you make your next move.

Use the arrow keys or W/A/S/D on a keyboard, or swipe on a touchscreen. Each input slides the entire board one step in that direction — there is no per-tile aiming. On-screen arrow buttons are also available for a tap-based alternative to swiping. The M key toggles sound on and off.

Most new tiles are 2s, but there is always some chance of a 4 appearing instead — about 10% on Classic, 5% on Wide, and 20% on Tiny. It is intentional randomness, not a bug, and part of why no two games play out exactly the same way.

Merge tiles until you create one worth 2048 (or 512 on Tiny, the 3×3 board, where 2048 is not a realistic goal). The most reliable method is the corner strategy: keep your highest tile locked in one corner, build a descending chain of tiles along the edge next to it, and avoid moves that would pull the highest tile away from that corner. 2048.lol has three board sizes rather than Easy/Medium/Hard labels. Classic is the default 4×4 game most people mean by "2048." Wide is a 5×5 board for extra room. Tiny is a 3×3 challenge mode with a stated goal of 512, since 2048 itself is not realistically reachable in nine cells. Full details are on the modes page.

Pick a corner — bottom-right is common — and try to keep your highest-value tile pinned there for the whole game. Build a chain of decreasing values along the row or column next to it, and avoid the one direction that would pull your anchor tile off the corner. This keeps the board organized instead of scattering big numbers where they cannot merge. The tips page covers this in more depth.

In practice, no — nine cells is not enough space to build the merge chain 2048 requires under the standard rules. That is why Tiny sets its stated goal at 512 instead. Reaching 512 on a 3×3 board is still a genuine challenge, since there is almost never a safe throwaway move.

You get a "You win" banner with the option to keep playing on the same board. Continuing past the target tile does not change the rules — the game still ends only when no move is possible — so many players treat reaching 2048 as a checkpoint on the way to a higher score, not the finish line.

Yes. Your best score, best tile, and games played for each board size are saved locally in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account or login. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data will look like a fresh start.

2048.lol is a browser game and needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab responsive without a network connection, but there is no dedicated offline app or install package.

No official 2048.lol app is required — the game is the website. You can bookmark it or add the tab to your phone’s home screen if your browser supports that, but you still play in the browser. We do not sell a separate iOS or Android build.

No. There is no sign-up, no email gate, and no profile. Your best scores and stats stay in this browser on this device. The tradeoff is that we cannot restore a run on a new device for you, since nothing is stored on our servers.

Open Stats from the game menu, tap Reset progress, then confirm with the second tap. That clears best scores, best tiles, and games played for every mode on this browser. It cannot be undone.

Local saves are lost if you clear cookies or site data for 2048.lol, switch browsers, use a private window that has since closed, or open the game on a different device. Some privacy tools and OS "lite" modes also wipe local storage. Because the save never left your browser, we cannot recover it from our side.
