A practical strategy guide for 2048: the corner method, building a descending chain, and the habits that keep a board alive long enough to reach 2048 and beyond.

One habit beats every trick
Nearly every strong 2048 strategy is a variation on the same idea: keep your biggest tile in a corner and never let a move pull it away from that corner unless you have no other option. Everything below builds on that one habit.

The corner method
Pick one corner — bottom-right is the most common choice — and commit to keeping your highest-value tile pinned there for the entire game. Every move you make should either preserve that position or actively build toward it. This single habit prevents the single biggest cause of a lost game: a huge tile getting stranded in the middle of the board where it can no longer merge with anything.

Build a descending chain
Next to your anchor tile, arrange the second-highest tile, then the third-highest, in a straight line along one edge. A board that reads 1024–512–256–128 across the bottom row is far more stable than the same four numbers scattered randomly — each tile has an obvious, safe merge waiting for it.

Avoid the fourth direction
If your anchor is bottom-right, your two "safe" directions are usually down and right. The direction that would pull your anchor tile away from its corner should be a last resort — reach for it only when no other move is available, and expect to spend a move or two recovering afterward.

Clear small tiles early
A board littered with un-merged 2s and 4s runs out of empty cells fast. When a small merge is available without disturbing your chain, take it — it is cheap insurance against a cramped board later.

Think one merge ahead
Before pressing a direction, ask what the board looks like immediately after. A move that looks fine right now but removes your only safe merge for next turn is usually the wrong move, even if it is not obviously bad in the moment.

Save undo for real mistakes
The one-step undo on 2048.lol exists to reverse a genuine misclick or a move that immediately and obviously breaks your chain — not to replay every turn until the board looks perfect. It resets as soon as you make another move, so use it deliberately.
By mode
How strategy shifts with board size
The corner method applies everywhere, but how much it forgives changes with the board. Full mode details are on the modes page.
On Classic (4×4)
This is the original game. There is rarely a wasted move available; every merge should serve the chain.
On Wide (5×5)
The extra space forgives a wandering strategy for a while, but the corner method still pays off — it is what turns a long game into a 2048 tile instead of a slow fade to a full board.
On Tiny (3×3)
With only nine cells, plan two moves ahead at minimum. A single move made "just to see what happens" can end the game. Aim for the 512 goal rather than 2048 — it is set at a realistic level for this board size.
