Modes

2048 Board Sizes

2048.lol has three boards: Classic 4×4 (the default), Wide 5×5 for extra room, and Tiny 3×3 as a challenge mode with 512 as the stated goal — variety clones usually skip.

Why three boards

Same puzzle, different amounts of space

Most 2048 clones only ship the original 4×4. 2048.lol treats modes as board sizes: Classic is that original game and starts selected so you can hit Play immediately. Wide opens the grid to 5×5 for more room. Tiny shrinks it to 3×3 as a challenge, with 512 as an honest win target instead of pretending 2048 is reachable in nine cells.

4×4 — the original

Classic

The original 2048 board: 4×4, the familiar 10% chance of a 4-tile, and the climb to 2048. This is the default — hit Play with no extra click.

Anyone who wants the game most people mean by "2048" — the original board size and rules, ready to play with no extra click.

5×5 — more room

Wide

A 5×5 grid for players who want extra space. Merges have more room to breathe, and a 4-tile is rarer, so a run can last longer without changing the core rules.

3×3 — goal 512

Tiny

Nine cells as a challenge mode. Reaching 2048 on a 3×3 board is not realistic, so the stated goal is 512 — almost every move matters.

Tiny's stated goal is 512, not 2048. Nine cells is not enough space to reliably build the merge chain a 2048 tile requires, so we set an honest target instead of a near-impossible one. See the tips page for strategy that works across all three boards.
